Glad I listened
I’ve listened to a few of Real Christianity podcasts irregularly but saw the buzz about 222 and 223, so I listened consecutively this evening. I wanted to listen to the “horse” so to speak versus opinions about the podcast only. I found it very graciously explained and leave without being offended. I can’t say I fully agree yet, but there wasn’t anything glaringly shocking to me about it. Although, I do have significant reservations about Doug Wilson after hearing first hand experiences at his church. I’m a victim of a few different assaults in my childhood through early adulthood, and it concerns me the things that light has been shed on. I’m not convinced of the Biblical patriarchy position at this time, but I’ve always leaned pretty much complementarian though I didn’t know that is what is was called years ago. I just knew the Bible and said that women are to be subject to men, willfully, in the same way Christ willfully submitted to the Father. I know Christ and the church is what marriage is to represent so I’m not trying to mix that up, just pointing to a desire to willfully submit because we desire to honor and glorify God above all. My hesitance with these episodes is the stance on Bible studies for women in this modern age. Not everyone has a homestead or is called to have one. Not everyone has a bunch of babies or the husband might say he doesn’t want anymore than a specific amount. We have more free time than the women in our history so our time today will look different because of this. We meet the needs of the community and church community. We school our children, we plan and execute seminars, mission dinners, etc etc. but there is much added room for learning, which I think might be needed because of the cultural war we are in now. Women need to understand doctrine and apologetics (sound of course) to help protect their kids, to combat every little thing and have an answer at all times. Academic theology plays a role here, and my husband may have zero ability to dive into that stuff with his 60+ hour work week while I have the flexibility to do so within his knowing about it. We go to a church that does women’s Bible studies. The entire elder board are Master seminary grads or have been proven by their character and life that they are godly men who protect and serve the body. We have a women’s board with an elder who oversees it and signs off on our studies. We have no “teacher” because we are doing inductive studies of a book of the Bible. We just have female facilitators. If there are difficult passages we might have one of the teaching elders or the primary pastor come and expound on it. I don’t see how this is going beyond the authority of our husbands or is dangerous when it’s vetted and sound. Sundays are expository. Sunday school is usually on Biblical truth practically applied to life circumstances. People are coming by the flocks to our church because of the heavy legalistic hands they’ve experienced in churches elsewhere often in regards to the roles of women and children. Our church is by no means perfect but it is healthy and able to be stood next to Scripture and seen as such. So I guess this hill seems an odd one to argue over too much. I appreciate the thought on it for sure. It’s definitely controversial among fellow believers though. I hope the lines of communication remain open and allows for further discussion.

Only two episodes in and my wife and I have learned a ton. We have been searching for something that gives true advice on how to shape our marriage how the Bible says and this is it. We can’t wait to keep learning and growing.
