Our "formative years" are suppose to be as young children, but for Shannon hers were in college. It was when she was studying psychology and sociology that she had the rude awakening of her parents severe mental health issues. They wanted to keep it quiet, but Shannon reached out to get them help anyway. However, Shannon didn't realize she was experiencing undiagnosed trauma herself. It was many years later and through a challenge from her daughter that her eyes were opened. Not only to her own trauma, but also to the prevalence of undiagnosed and untreated trauma in society.
