“I’m gonna try to be as fair as possible. I have never started a podcast, nor starred in a network hit, nor had a career after said network hit; I have no idea how hard that all must be
HOWEVER -
There’s a lot of frustration I’ve had since starting this podcast that just seems easy to avoid.
1. Very little structure to each episode, which doesn’t have to be a bad thing but somehow I’m just not as into the 3 hosts’ random chit chat as I’ve been w other “rewatch” pods. I can’t put my finger on it other than that I’m a New Girl fan first, a Zooey-Hannah-Lamorne fan second. I think that’s probably a majority of the listeners. And it feels like the podcast trends more toward the actors’ experiences than it does about talking about the characters’ quirks & growth. I’m hoping this will improve as they revisit later seasons but there are a number of very popular rewatch pods that I feel like they should have used as reference points
2. As someone who listens to podcasts constantly and has a weekly rotation, it was *infuriating* that for months the notification of a “new” show was actually just a repost of one that had already been released!! Some of these they called “rerun” in the title but just as many weren’t - honestly it’s either lazy or blatantly greedy, not sure which is worse. Go on a break after the season if you need to, or release the same episode w a little extra content that didn’t make the cut, idk just not this gaslighting!
3. The ads. The ads. The ADS! This is actually what prompted this review in the first place. It was already something that bugged me, but today I decided to give the Jake Johnson rerun a go and oh my gosh it’s egregious - turned out I had some spare time to verify with hard data that I’m not crazy, the ads are just ridiculous:
Not including the 3:25 of ads at the end of the episode, there are 5 ad breaks averaging 3 1/2 mins each.
One ad break comes less than 2 mins after the last ended.
Two of them interrupted the podcast mid sentence.
Including the final break, the total time spent on ads is 19:56 - and this was *excluding* the ad introductions & “back from our break!” in my timing!!
I don’t know if it’s the podcast network, Lamorne & Hannah needing extra flow, or both - whatever it is, the length and frequency (and frankly just the content) of the ads been pissing me off consistently.
I really want to like this podcast - I’d saved it in my library well before it launched - but the whole vibe of it since it started has really soured me. I’ll give S2 a chance but honestly very skeptical.
Two stars - 1 because I have some hope and I genuinely want the show to succeed; the 2nd because the guests are very fun and significantly enhance the episodes.”
