Energetic and fun
We all love hearing about movies that became train wrecks in production and flops at the box office. The best episodes here give us the painful, embarrassing details of ego clashes, location catastrophes, and self-sabotage. The hosts are spirited and enthusiastic with informed experience in the business. A few minor criticisms: they tend to take the producer’s side, tsk-tsking over blown budgets and risky behavior on the set. I think most film buffs cheer on the romantic doggedness of a driven director, no matter how crazy. Child labor laws aside, let’s celebrate those warped visions! The best episodes focus on the production side (“Popeye,” “The Abyss”) rather than tedious front-office battles over budgets and credits. The hosts’ gaps in their moviegoing are sometimes betrayed in off-the-cuff remarks (“I didn’t know Kubrick directed ‘Spartacus.’”) But they’re young and a little ignorance is balanced by energetic, well-told stories.

I had to put all my other podcasts on hold when I discovered this one. Lizzy and Chris are such a joy to listen to. With in-depth research and great story telling, I can’t not play another episode as soon as one finishes.
