I realize that this story doesn’t portray all white Southerners, and that racism exists in the North, though usually in less obvious forms. The visceral violence in the first episode hints at the terror and danger of the fight for Civil Rights. It is so easy for me, as a white man, to be out of touch with that danger and fear.”
