“Chris Hayes’ comparison of the China vs. US response to the Coronavirus (successful authoritarian control vs. unsuccessful laisee faire), is seductive but inappropriate. The proper comparison is: authoritarian control vs. the failure to appeal to self control, a response that the US is capable of and from time to time good at. The US response failed because there was no such appeal, largely because the US President has none and does not understand the concept. The clamouring for leadership is a yearning for that appeal.
