Deeply self-indulgent
Despite the over-wrought narration and Vice-like sensationalism, as a fan of music and history I found the series engaging and interesting for awhile, but the novelty wore thin as it became clear they ultimately had nothing to show for their “investigation” and were milking the mystery for all it’s worth. They try to salvage it with pseudo-profundity but in the end this podcast could have said just as little in six episodes or less. The narrator’s breathless recounting of every “clue” is exhausting by the end. Of course Klaus keeps taking about the power of music. He’s a musician! They all believe in the power of music. It’s hard for me to believe that a longtime reporter can be this naive, which leads me to think that much of this podcast was knowingly overblown for dramatic tension. Frankly I’m disappointed in Crooked Media for entering the world of sensationalist, reality-tv “journalism” with this podcast. I hope they don’t do it again.

Such a wild yarn, and so nice to be transported to other times and places right now.

The levels of propaganda become like good poetry or literature essentially unknowable.

This podcast is incredible. More like a complex and intricate film than a podcast. Amazing work!
