Embarrassing blind spots
I listened to half the episodes on Spotify. It’s ultimately overdetermined history for 40 year old liberal white men. The worst part is how this series is patronizing towards Black lives. Whether it be Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, or MLK, you can expect to get a flattened image of real people, very little empathy, and thrilling conclusions like “This American knew America is Good... and Bad” because the white, overly male, aging Crooked media team doesn’t have the talented diversity necessary to see further.

One of the best podcast trailers ever! I’m excited to hear more soon.

It’s hard to take the story seriously for a few reasons - weird and almost childish storytelling, not much of a mystery and no hooks to make me want to come back for episode 2.

Totally the kind of dogged, twisting story that audio is made to explore. An incredible start to what is sure to be an incredible series.
