“Macenna — love you to pieces and everything you do, but your latest episode on “home” explains exactly in a nutshell why Texans are so peeved about Californians moving here (even if you’re not from California originally). Austin was a big city with its own little funk and attitude, but over the last 10 years has lost its since of uniqueness more and more every year. The LA coffee shop and restaurants you mentioned replaced staples of the “keep Austin weird” scene. Old restaurants. Mom and pop stores. Business you and your mom and Romeo would fall in love with. And more often lately, old buildings like the cottage you restored. And while it’s not just Californians to blame, those moving here from other states have definitely played a factor in driving up costs of living. Cottages like yours would never have been more than $120k 5-10 years ago. You’re here for the right reasons, you made a healthy investment, and I love what you did with the building. But we don’t want anymore LA style, whether it’s a restaurant or the cringey plastic surgery girls you mentioned, ruining the special traditions and memories and honored culture that so many love (and I think you’d love too!). Just thought maybe that would clarify some of the sentiment 🙂”
