Listen now
Description
As we know from the frontlines and from the work that the feminist movement has done over many decades, male violence against women is incredibly prevalent and has historically and continues to be discussed in many problematic ways in public discourse. Whether it is ignoring or minimizing its existence or propagating myths, we know it is pervasive to all forms of male violence against women – from incest, prostitution, rape, wife battering, to sexual harassment. For the first episode of our series Critiquing Male Violence Against Women in the Media, we’re looking specifically at wife battering and femicide. Janey Starling from the UK feminist group Level Up answers our questions about its successful campaign at getting the two largest press governing bodies in the UK, IPSO and IMPRESS, to agree to implement a number of journalistic standards when it comes to reporting on wife battering and femicide. The interview is followed by a discussion between Florence and Laurel, collective members at Vancouver Rape Relief, where they look at specific examples of problematic coverage in the Canadian press.
