“Clay Conry manages to get some of the best guests in the industry onto this podcast and then, sadly, butchers the interview.
He has two things he needs to work on: the first is to actually listen to the answer and to ask the follow up question based on the answer given. Instead, it appears Clay has a list of questions that he is going to ask and he does so. He doesn’t dig into what’s being said, he doesn’t extract more meaning, or clarity, or explore interesting comments further. It’s very frustrating.
The second issue is Clay’s determination, in every episode (and often several times an episode) to state his opinion about something in a long, and often boring, monologue. This is ok the first time you hear it; when you’re a regular listener and you’ve heard a variation on the same opinion spouted numerous times - whilst the interviewee, whose experience we have all tuned in to hear, sits there mutely - you will likely find yourself internally screaming “shut up Clay”. It wouldn’t be so bad if this was natural dialogue, to draw something out of the interviewee but it’s not. It isn’t even a question, often statement after statement. Sometimes you can almost hear the frustration in the interviewee’s voice, especially when he doesn’t agree with everything Clay is saying.
In summary, great guests, some of the best. Clay should listen carefully to what’s being said and not be afraid to dig deeper, he should remember the interviewee is the star and that his own job is to extract everything the star knows, for the benefit of the listener.
Five stars for guests, one star for interview technique but the latter can improve, so there’s hope! 3 stars average!”
