“Jared and John, I’m really enjoying these podcasts and really looking forward to more of them. The main reason I’m commenting is because what you were saying about books for Chinese children exactly matches my experience - even books for very young children have me wasting so much time looking up unfamiliar and irrelevant words and I totally agree about all the onomatopoeia! My tutor is Chinese and she lends me children’s books, and although she is great I don’t think she really gets why they are hard for second language learners. I was so happy to find the Mandarin Companion books! Although the language is more advanced than “The little frog jumped in the pond. Plop!” I can read them much more fluently without having to look up words like frog and plop! The only downside is I’m listening to your podcasts when I should be listening to Chinese! But it’s good to take a break and still be learning something about Chinese.
Another comment: Several of the guests on the podcasts have commented about how Chinese grammar is (relatively) easy, and we don’t have to worry about things like verb conjugation and genders. That’s true of course, but what about measure words? We don’t have to worry about the gender of nouns but we do need to worry about their measure words. Maybe you could discuss MWs in a future podcast?”
