““You can learn Chinese” lives up to its name; listen to each podcast to find out why Jared and John say it’s perfectly feasible to learn Chinese. Each episode typically (i)starts with Jared and John discussing an aspect of learning Chinese; (ii) has a fun “rave or rage” section; (iii) introduces a graded learner book; and (iv) has an interview with someone about their experience learning Chinese.
I always learn something from each episode. Some great tips from J&J are
(i) read, read, and read;
(ii) progress from reading words vs characters, to reading sentences vs words, to reading passages vs sentences, and to reading books vs passages; and
(iii) work out your personal motivation for learning Chinese.
But listen to the podcast for yourself; see if you have a different set of top 3 tips for learning Chinese.
J&J, I have a question: do the Chinese have the equivalent of the “plain English movement”? For example, George Orwell had a set of rules for communicating clearly in English. In the case of Chinese for example, I feel that the clarity could be improved significantly with more punctuation. Or an overly long sentence should be reduced to multiple shorter sentences. Or (I am less sure here) active voice is preferred to passive voice. Am I right? Curious to know your thoughts. Maybe you can discuss in your next episode.”
