Tracking my teens
Alan Shepherd became the first American in space when I lay in hospital, nine years old. As Jim Lovell flew around the moon at Christmas 1968 I unwrapped my copy of Axis Bold As Love - Jimi Hendrix- I was a 17 college student. When Apollo 13 went wrong I was 19 year old student entirely captivated, minute by minute. But in July 1969, the apogee, I was 18, at home, drunk and trying to stay awake with my parents as we gazed endlessly at a shadowy image of a spacecraft leg and waited for someone to emerge. Thank you for this engrossing opportunity to grasp the enormity of of the flight, the decade and my teens!
