They led a nationwide media campaign as hundreds of volunteers travelled to East London to search for her. There are rumours circulating regarding the incident. Mahatma Gandhi described black people as “savage, raw and living a life of indolence and nakedness.” People around the world are protesting for equal rights for black people. Protests in London were attended by thousands – all under the shadow of a statue of Gandhi. That’s how deeply entrenched black racism is under the Establishment. We need to unlearn what we think we know about these statues and understand that they aren’t idols.
