“I heard about this podcast from And the Runner-Up Is (which is excellent). For Oscar watchers/actressexuals, this is a (generally) fun trip down memory lane; however, it’s a stretch to call it an “LGBT guide” to the Oscars “per category, per year” because it only ever covers Best Actress and Bess Supporting Actress categories so is not exactly comprehensive (or particularly queer, other than that the two hosts are gay).
And speaking of the hosts, Brandon sounds much more thoughtful, nuanced and like a real cinephile than Joey, who seems to be “here for” only broad, campy or over-the-top performances in films; otherwise, they’re dismissed as “boring.” No depth, no real substance—just basic, ignorant takes that are shallow at best. It would be nice to get richer, deeper, more analytical discussions of Oscars past, particularly given the time periods—and cultural forces—when these movies were made.
P.S. Singular doesn’t mean single. (Those words have different meanings, Joey.)”
