I use to love this show.
I am really bothered by the latest interview. I have been with this podcast since the third show came out and I really liked it. It was very in-depth and had really interesting conversations. However the progressive mindset has become noticeable in the interviews. What I mean is modern/progressive views of history is to compare it to modern culture and to point out the differences. There is another mindset of studying it and trying to understand the culture which was at that time, try to separate out biases, and and maybe take lessons out of what they were doing. The last interview was very juvenile. Jake invited a speaker on to his show and was very rude thoughout the second half of the interview. He asked a guy to explain his thoughts and Jake actively tried and succeeded in shutting him down. It got to the point where it was awkward because the speaker didn’t want to argue and Jake just wanted to debate. Lastly, it doesn’t take a doctorates degree to understand that people will often look at different culture or beliefs systems to try to get a difference in perspective. All beliefs from Stoicism, Buddhism, Christianity, to Liberalism have their flaws. The point of study these are to make oneself better, not to become an extremist in it. Next time your on your tiger try seeing the forest for the trees.

One of the best intros to ancient history I’ve ever listened to w the knowledge to engage the experts he brings to the table in ways a layperson can fully understand. Can make a discussion of Homer’s Iliad an edge of your seat experience and looks at history through many lens.

Rather than walk through Greek history and culture purely chronologically, this podcast tends to choose a particular topic, and then explores it in some detail. What's great is that the host often brings on experts on the topic to discuss it with him, such as professors from Stanford, etc....Read full review »
