Fantastic
By far the best lecture series I have encountered in iTunes U, Donald Kagan presents a compelling, vivid picture of ancient Greece from prehistory through the persian and peloponnesian wars and up to the time of roman rule. Dr. Kagan has found the perfect balance between formal presentation and informal story-telling, always supremely lucid and disarmingly authoritative. Much of the time, it is hard to tell whether he is reading from a script or talking from memory, his focus and attention to detail contrasts with a relaxed and engaging presentation that keeps you engaged and attentive. I have found myself repeating the whole series twice over just because I enjoy listening to him. Whether you are a layperson looking to read up on ancient greek history, or a student looking for an introductory course, you cannot go wrong in choosing this series. Side note: Dr. Kagan is a well-known conservative, but even if your political stance happens to differ, it's no reason to stay away. Although some arguably political opinions shine through occationally, they are always presented as such, and they never interfere with the subject matter.Read full review »

What a fantastic insight into an ancient world! Mr. Kagen really paints a picture of the ancient world as an extremely sophisticated place. It is a great to see our ancestors as multi-dimensional and complex, instead of simpletons, as is often implied by the modern “Hollywood” culture.
