Generally insightful, rousing discussions
It's fun to listen to smart, engaging people who actually enjoy reading talk about books. I don't always agree with what these folks have to say, but they don't dismiss the works out of hand and are generally insightful and informed about what's being said about the books elsewhere. Nice work, Slate. I'm going to have to agree with what other posters have said about Katie Roiphe, though. She's obtuse, disruptive, and shrill when it comes to ideas and modes of expression that don't jibe with her own. Nothing she says here makes me want to read the books she's written; if her literary impulses are anything like her critical ones, they likely don't have an abundance of life experience to back them up -- just hermetic status-jockeying. No, thanks.Read full review »

Usually wonderful discussions on this show. Just wish this podcast happened much more often. Not that I always agree with the opinions on some of the books, but always thought-provoking. Great job!!

It’s especially noticeable with headphones on, and the amplified buzzing in my ears becomes distracting to the...Read full review »
