“Loved listening to this show but WOW you lost me in the latest episode ‘Was My Ancestor Australia’s First Serial Killer?’ The guest was discussing how the gossip and media reporting in the town was incredibly racist against Black and Chinese members of the community and I was nodding along as Meshel emphatically agreed that the racism was so extreme and public at the time…
only for her to reveal she was talking about racism against Irish people?? She went on to overemphasise how terrible the public treatment was and how hard it must have been (and never once mentioned she was talking about any Irish people of colour).
The guest even went on to bring up the derogatory reporting and treatment of Indigenous women at the time - only for Meshel to cut her off and say ‘they did that to the Irish girls too!!’ and talk over her to say all the ways they were mistreated …
PLEASE educate yourself on how racism against white people isn’t a thing - it’s so dangerous to be adding these ‘examples’ to discussions about very REAL and harmful discrimination. Yes, no doubt it would’ve been hard to arrive and be told ‘not to apply to jobs’ etc, but you need to learn about all the ways white people did (and still do) automatically have soooo much more privilege than people of colour. Really disappointing ‘additions’ to what was an otherwise interesting story from the guest.”
