My favorite Star-Trek-Verteran non-Trek Star Trek Podcast!
Combining Babylon 5 and Star Trek is something of a tabu in many fan-groups. When it's done, the topic is usually "who stole from who?" and not much else. "Babylon 5 For the First Time" shows how much we've been missing out on! I'm happy to say: There are many Babylon 5 podcasts out there. Old fans returning to Babylon 5, newcomers being introduced to the show, experts talking about the behind-the-scenes. There's even a group playing the old Babylon 5 RPGs! So with all those options, what makes "Babylon 5 For the First Time" unique? The experience and unbridled optimism of two Star Trek podcasting veterans! Babylon 5 is a long show, it's densely packed with details, it relies on long-term storytelling, slow explorations of themes, and has huge rewatch-value. But it's also a show of the 90s, flawed and limited by budget, the realities of production and technology. Going through it all is a long-term commitment. As much fun as it is to see people experience this extraordinary show for the first time, there's also always a bit of a worry: Will they stick with show or end it halfway through? Will they pick up on all the small details the show puts down? Will they have the patience to let the show develop its own identity or will they draw their conclusions too early on? What expectations will they bring in? And this is where the Star Trek veterancy shines! Right from the get-go, Brent and Jeff hosts the show with the confidence of experienced podcasters and in their assesment of the "Gathering" it becomes clear: Here are two guys who aren't afraid to be critical of the show they're watching. But they're also fans of huge franchise that has had tons of ups and downs, good episodes and bad ones, and so they know where to find things to praise, what to criticise, and where to be patient with a show that has yet to find its footing. This underlying experience and approach to Babylon 5 as a 90s genre show is what elevates this podcast and allows the hosts to offer not just an earnest reaction to the show, but also some great discussions and insight where they can draw from the entirety of Star Trek canon to find parallels, references, and differences. On top of that we get, of course, plenty of direct references and comparisons between Babylon 5 and Trek. The scoring of episodes for "Trek-ness" has a promising start during these first few episodes, and can only become more interesting the longer Babylon 5 goes on. With most of the show still ahead and hours upon hours of discussion still to come, this is a very promising start! There's nothing more to say but: Live Long and Prosper*. *This is not a Star Trek Podcast.Read full review »

I’m a B5 vet, but it’s been a blast re-watching B5 week-to-week with these guys, and experiencing it through their eyes. With their encyclopedic knowledge of Star Trek, they bring a great perspective on the show. It’s clear they are putting a ton of work into the show, watching episodes multiple...Read full review »

It’s so much fun to relive the joy of watching Babylon 5 for the first time with these two. Even if you don’t always agree with their assessment of the individual episodes, it’s always fun to play along when they guess what’s going to happen. The hard part is to hold back on spoilers when...Read full review »
