High end literary conversations
I’m new to Backlisted but it already feels like a podcast I could settle in with for a long, leisurely listen. The whole project is a terrific antidote to a tendency to fixate on the the past five minutes, or indeed the next five minutes. This program isn’t selling anything, save for lively conversation and a great love of good writing. The podcast draws upon decades of reading and reflection, and seems to effortlessly entertain and inform. They’re not above a little bit of literary gossip, either, which is nice. The conversations are enthusiastic without being gushing. The episode on Anita Brookner is a case in point. And while each episode has a focus, you will find any number of other books and writers getting a mention. Also worth noting is the use of added audio clips, which gives a richer texture. And crucially, the presenters are not afraid to read aloud from the books, which of course is what it is all about. In short, a gem.

I recently discovered backlisted and have been recommending this fantastic podcast to everyone I know with a literary bone in their body. It's great. I'm in the middle of discovering Last Exit to Brooklyn. How did I miss this first time around???!Read full review »

This podcast is delightful. The hosts are the perfect combination of erudite funny and self-deprecating. And there knowledge of literature blows my mind.

Backlisted has become one of my favorite book related podcasts. It’s warm, funny, and intelligent. And it’s got me reading Georgette Heyer romances! Would love a discussion on Anthony Powell (What became of Waring) or Harold Nicholson’s Public Faces or anything by Dorothy Sayers.
