Perfect podcast. No notes.

I love this podcast. It's like an old friend pulling a book from the shelf and enthusing about it with such wit and intelligence that you want to rush out and grab your own copy. What I particularly appreciate is the connection the hosts have to the books being discussed.Read full review »

A friend introduced me to this podcast and it’s so lovely. I can’t claim to be anywhere near the level of erudite reading these folk attain but, like the best podcasts, it doesn’t matter. The choices are eclectic (from coffee table books and their delights to fungus the bogeyman and Anne Sexton),...Read full review »

A previous reviewer described this podcast as both challenging and comforting at the same time - summing up much of my feelings about this gem. Yes it can be a bit ‘laddish’ on occasions but the presenters are so charming and funny this is quickly forgiven. I am still working my way through the...Read full review »

What a joy. These are the conversations I don’t get to have in my day to day life. It’s not often you find another person who’s read Gaudy Night. These conversations have filled a hole for me, made my reading richer, and bring me pure delight.

I’m so mad that I missed 8 years of this wonderful book review podcast. I have to say thanks to Gilbert Cruz of the New York Times Book Review podcast for mentioning it. I have a lot to catch up on and my TBR list is getting longer and longer. So many more good books foryou to discuss. I hope you...Read full review »

Absolutely smashing episode. The very book I’ve been searching for.

I thought I was a reader until I discovered Backlisted. The boys have charm and wit and have given me the gift of books I never thought I could read and books I never heard of. A whole world of extraordinary books has been opened up for me. My life is better and how wonderful it is to learn with...Read full review »

Your episode on Basil Bunting, really bringing him alive while exploring his complexity. I have so much respect for the contribution that Neil Astley has made to the world of poetry - his anthologies are consistently superb. Kirsten Norrie impressed as delightful. Poetry lovers just cannot go...Read full review »

A rare podcast that’s both challenging and incredibly comforting at the same time. I listen to Backlisted in bed, when I’m running, when I’m travelling. And if I’m ever feeling a little bit down, nothing perks me up like a few smart, warm, ridiculously enthusiastic people gathered round...Read full review »

It can be really hard to listen to in the car due to the audio levels. Phone and stereo volume have to be at max, but some voices are too low and some too loud. Find myself constantly having to adjust and still can’t hear everything that’s being said.

A superb podcast that has inspired me to read so many fascinating books I would’ve otherwise never considered. The perfect pod, enthusiastic and intelligent hosts and always interesting guests.

I only ever really listened to the first 15-20 minutes of each episode to hear what the two hosts were currently reading (I would look up the episode’s book on my own). Since they recently came back from hiatus they have stopped doing that (without an explanation). I guess people just want to...Read full review »

Love this podcast so much, delivered with such love, honesty and enthusiasm. I was really struggling with focusing on longer reads after lockdown and this helped reignite my passion for reading by opening up complete worlds of new writers. The only criticism I have, and it is not relating to the...Read full review »

.. if only they would revamp their tech. Pandemic remote recording has only made their recording issues worse. Now that they’re running ads, maybe they’ll have the money to get their act together and record and master the podcast properly. Aside from that, it’s lovely — and has led me to scores...Read full review »

I love this podcast and I've listened for so long, but they really miss on some points that can be super hurtful. As a neurodivergent person myself, it can take me well out of the experience. On the recent summer episode, Nicky states that the passage she's about to read is proof of why...Read full review »

My favourite podcast. Always entertaining and insightful. John, Andy and guests’ knowledge and insights shine through, but never condescending. Makes me feel cleverer and more cultured than I am, even when I usually haven’t read the book being discussed.

The premise behind this pod is great! But where are the writers from global majority countries? Why are they never discussed? What about Jamaica Kincaid; Chinua Achebe; the mighty women writers from Zimbabwe? The gaze feels very white.

Thank you all for doing the episode on Hubert Selby Jr and Last Exit to Brooklyn. That got me hooked. Many thanks. Love and respect to you all. Joe S. Thomas/ USA.

I really enjoy these discussions. But there’s no effort to balance the mics. There’s too much whispering! It’s easy to listen to but often hard to hear.

One of the few podcasts that has intelligent conversation on books! Thoughtful observations on theme and style, with specific references to actual text to demonstrate great writing. A joy to listen to, this is engaging and inspires my reading.

I’d like to suggest an episode on ´The Doves of Venus’ by Olivia Manning. First published in 1955, but somehow both timeless and modern.

Just listened to the bogeyman Raymond Briggs episode. Got tears in my eyes. I loved the Fungus book which I feelarrived inour school library in1978. InAustralia. But maybe it was 1977.

How come I have not found this podcast earlier? A serious conversation about books and some of my favourites here. How about ‘extinction’ by Thomas Bernhard for a future episode?

I just started listening to this, and I’m so happy to have access to an archive of passionate conversations between genuine book lovers. The hosts and guests read widely and are deeply curious about the authors they are reading. They are sharp and knowledgeable, but not pretentious. Thank you!

(I bet those who are not ageing hipsters can also gain much enjoyment!) A perfect podcast, introducing me continually to books I’ve missed & reenchanting those I love. The hosts’ and guests’ tone is just perfect: playful, open, learned but unpretentious, unashamedly in love with reading.

Just listened to the re-run of this. In fact, I listened to it twice. It’s a superb example of why Backlisted is such a wonderful podcast. Occasionally brilliant analysis (see Alma Cogan for a case in point) but I'm grateful for the timings in the show notes.
