Compelling: and recommended
I'm midway through the series of podcasts on the Battle of the Somme. They are a worthy successor to the equally special series on the Battle of Verdun. I'll write separately on the latter series as that deserves its own recognition. Mike Cunha examine the strategic and tactical elements of the battle especially well. He is at pains to look at the battle from the wider perspective of the French and German combatants and to balance the 2 factions of British opinion, the one criticising the slaughter as unnecessary while the other defending the attritional nature of the battle as a necessary step to degrading the operational effectiveness of the German Army. In that regards, episode 6 is given over entirely to an interview with Prof Philpott, author of "Bloody Victory", a book which alaborates and defends the latter argument. While I believe that argument is flawed after reading the book, it does not detract from the intrinsic interest, value and objectivity of the episode and its contribution to the series. Mike Cunha makes amply clear the lack of cohesion in the British planning and tactical execution of the early staged of the battle. This lead directly to the casualties of the infamous "First Day" which accounted for ~15% of the total casualties of a battle that lasted ~140 days. The latest episode, 7, takes us to that unhappy day. I'm hoping the rest of the series will continue to provide the same interest and fluency till it reaches the final Battle of Ancre. Based on the complementary series on Verdun, I'm confident it will. A wonderful series of podcasts which I commend to anyone interested in these Battles. It would be great if the Battle of Passchendaele were next in line and eventually the series of battles in 1918.Read full review »
