Fighting a good 'Battle'
I listen to a slew other other podcasts every week - KCRW's The Treatment and The Business, the /Filmcast, Stupid for Movies, AV Talk, The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith, the IGN Digigods - but the one I most look forward to is Battleship Pretension. Why? It's a no-frills, intelligent, funny and unabashedly subjective discussion of film and all its undercurrents. What distinguishes it from other movie podcasts is its approach - rather than just offer movie reviews, the podcast leans more towards thematic discussions of film, and it also regularly offers profiles of industry members who don't normally get the spotlight - Gordon Willis, the prince of darkness, for instance, or, this week, the great composer Bernard Herrmann. Capped with a regular flurry of wry and unique guests (including a recent visit from Townsend Coleman, the voice actor behind Michelangelo of the 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle animated series), this is a great place to spend an hour every week. Highly recommended.Read full review »
