“I was recommended to this podcast by the Modern Love podcast. It was described as a series of essays read by actors who inspired the stories. Cool!
However, take the episode with Bobby Berk about the Venezuelan girl. It is read by Bobby from his perspective. But he wasn’t there. How could he know if Valentina was shocked by her mom’s reaction . Its a silly example, but the point is, I want to hear from Valentina. Not Bobby telling what be imagines Valentina’s story is.
Her story seemed very generic. And a commercial for gay rights rather than a heartfelt story of how Valentina’s mom was influenced by the show.
The fact that we were told how the mom character was so distant from her daughter for so long, and we get no character development outside of “she watched the entire season” and then suddenly she is the most woke person in Venezuela? It seems unauthentic at best.
I hope the show pivots, and follows the example of Modern Love, in which stories are written by the people experiencing them.”
