“I had given this podcast a *formerly* deserved 1 Star review for a generally liberal atmosphere towards slight dishonesties and misrepresentations, and unbalanced points of view, generally inconsistent with the modern realities of these professions.
I have now changed that score to 4 stars since they have now made real steps to take on board my criticism. In fairness, those criticisms are what I, subjectively, deem to be a valid criticism, but that's how reviews work; they are subjective and deeply personal. You, dear reader, are free to disagree.
I checked to see if anything had changed recently, (I tend to be fair minded about this), and a "Munk Style Debate" caught my ear.
I was incredulous; the side arguing against recommending their chosen profession (Pediatric Surgery) actually discussed genuine issues with that profession and expectations versus reality.
And I was blown away. Kudos to the side arguing against their own chosen profession. That takes a very judicious attitude to accomplish. And it is a bold, uncomprising point of view which should add to our faith in this doctor. She's not here to go along and get along, she's serious about her profession, and thus has taken the inner work required to see its weaknesses as well as strengths, and it almost certainly a better doctor and member of the community for it. And someone whose point of view deserves to be listened to, to improve the profession, and outcomes.
Here is a medical podcast ACTUALLY beginning to discuss elements of the profession in a well rounded way! Here are pediatricians getting BEYOND the argument for which is "saving kids lives is worth any price career-wise" (which I can sympathize with), and to a deeper, more genuine discussion of the flaws with said profession!
Bravo! Excellent work!
The fact that such extraordinary, real, discussions are now taking place means that I have absolutely no choice but to update the score to 4 Stars. I want to give five stars, except that not all episodes are quite as remarkable as this Munk Debate gem.
The last star (which would earn this podcast the mythical 5 out of 5 stars), is not something I will just give away. I do not give away 5 stars easily at all. They are practically unobtainable. You can earn 4 stars. 5 stars you have to work night and day, and be more than simply a class of your own, to achieve.
5 stars will be reserved for: if and when the podcast is fully reformed and has taken aboard what I think is a very valid criticism; that they *formerly* presented a misrepresentative "doe-eyed" view of the professions (at times), where somehow job stressors, job conditions, the substantiality of what they are actually able to accomplish through their work (not the doe-eyed "we save lives" line, but a more genuine understanding of what is going on and to what extent lives are actually being impacted and how this can be improved), and remuneration (money) were not key motivating or demotivating factors for those involved. They are. It's better to face this reality than delude the audiences as a pied-piper into a false image of the profession, which only distorts who enters each profession and, in my opinion, is currently worsening match outcomes, expectations, public understanding and intake, etc... All of which are negative externalities affecting the World at this very moment, that we all should endeavour to avoid wherever possible.
I have kept my old, *out-of-date*, and only *formerly* deserved, admittedly hastily written, 1 star review below, so that those reading can fully appreciate how far this podcast is now making strides to right itself:

OLD 1 STAR REVIEW:
Dishonest podcast, the constant misrepresentations cause too much cognitive dissonance for me
All of the Doctors in this podcast try hard to come across as paragons of virtue & intelligence, but I get the feeling that they’re actually quite dull and bored. They don’t sound like they love their jobs. One of the few honest people in this podcast just came out said, point blank, if they could do it all again, they wouldn’t choose this career. Which was the only good episode because it dealt with reality as they see it, not the fictional façade they try to create in the other episodes. It’s not even that putting me off about this podcast, it’s that they’re generally not upfront & HONEST about it. If they came out and said “look, the REAL reason I took this job route was for money, let’s just get that out of the way at the start”, then I’d genuinely feel bad for their predicament and RESPECT their honesty (it shows they respect the listeners when they’re upfront) & give a 5 star review for presenting a truthful, honest look at the profession. But instead, they just drone on humorlessly, pretending the money wasn’t the major factor, which it plainly was in nearly all of their cases. That cognitive dissonance is just a massive turn off. I don’t like being lied to or misrepresented to by both podcasters & interviewees. Hence 1 star.”Read full review »
