In This Podcast Summary * Being Beta is not the absence of confidence * What does an unhealthy Beta and Alpha look like? * Defining Beta and Alpha Being Beta is not the absence of confidence I think we have a spectrum. There’s the unhealthy Beta that tends to go self-pity, shame, passive aggressiveness, and there’s the overinflated Alpha who’s just ego driven, everybody-else-outta-the-way and doesn’t think of others, but when they both get healthy they look a lot like each other. They’re here in the middle and they embrace both sides of that confidence, that strength but also that emotional attunement. (Billy) What does an unhealthy Beta and Alpha look like? It all boils down to insecurities, and that it manifests in different ways: * For an insecure Alpha, this could manifest as showing off instead of showing up in your friend groups and relationships, and it is all about them. * For an insecure Beta, they become quiet, small, and shrink themselves because they feel less than. A healthy Beta can teach a healthy Alpha how to step back and observe their actions, be accountable for what they bring to the table, and to “clean their side of the street”. A healthy Alpha can show a Beta how to express their needs within a discussion, and not revert back to being agreeable all the time just to keep the peace.
