A fascinating chronological account of the British and its relationship with the EU. As a little kid at the time of referendum of the 70’s, I have been gripped by the backstory to the utter disaster we are now wrestling with. It has illuminated many of the dusty corners I’ve either not been aware...Read full review »

A decent go at a complex matter. Some perspectives left out.... Very BBC. Yes, we were all frustrated, but it doesnt speak to the 'northerner', if you know what i mean?Read full review »

The events of spring 2019 seem an awfully long time ago now and we’re living through historic times as we leave the EU so this is the excellent first draft of that history. These new episodes feature Tory MP Mark Francois discussing the importance of getting consent and how he sometimes refuses...Read full review »

Listening to this podcast rather late on the day has made me even more angry about brexit the Tory party and the right wing media. It should be compulsory listening to leavers to show them how they were taken for fools

Always entertaining, never obvious, great choice of both necessary and unlikely interviewees.

This is a brilliant series - better content and intel from the key moments than any other analysis of Brexit. The writing is lovely - but why the need to repeat ad nauseum large chunks. If I hear once more “first draft of history etc”, “while the patient is still wriggling on the operating...Read full review »

Such a good series; great chats and tunes and really fast paced. Almost worth leaving the EU for.

I have learned so much about our relationship with Europe and why we are in the mess we are now. Really entertaining too (laughed the whole way through ‘up yours Delors’).

Fantastic podcast. Really puts the whole mess into perspective. Thoroughly researched, great interviews, well presented. Thoughtful and intelligent. A credit to Mark Markell.

Really impressed by this series. Great long, historical view and interviews with the key players. I like the way it’s balanced and dispassionate - but engagingly so.

Really helps form an idea of how Brexit got to this point via past actions. Very good for anyone trying to understand this whole mess.

An interesting series of Podcasts showing how the drip, drip anti European sentiment from Conservative politicians and press led us to this place of anger, division and chaos.

A true miniskirt - short enough to be interesting, long enough to cover the essentials.

Been meaning to write - this is the best analysis covering Brexit and I love the historical approach and unique way the stories and ideas are told x

After two and a half years of it ... who would want to listen to a podcast about Brexit ?* (*the UK’s attempt to leave Europe) And who would be able to make such a podcast interesting ??? The answer is here - a first rate journalist’s task is to take a complicated and frankly dull subject that...Read full review »

A truly excellent review of the political shenanigans regarding our membership or otherwise of the European project over the last 40 years or so . There’s so much information included in this series that I was not aware of , despite having lived through it and voting a couple of times on it. Our...Read full review »

First class production that is well produced and easy to follow. My favourite was the Jimmy Goldsmith one. Shines a very bright torch on our crop of useless politicians. Major bonus is there is no Lord Adonis in sight!!

Listening to Mark is always a pleasure and this series is so well told and has great access to those who lived, battled and passionately tried to craft our relationship with the European project. Ultimately, the story is about the sense of betrayal in the people by the politicians who tried to...Read full review »

A good historical review, though like the process itself, things have gotten muddier in the last two episodes (#14 & #15) as the series comes present. Well explained, often objective and balanced, so basic tenets of good journalism are met. Where it perhaps falls short is the very...Read full review »

A concise and semi humorous insight to our relationship with Europe from ‘73 to present times. The author pitches it just right, keeping you enthralled on what could have been a very dry subject that we all think we know, but have probably forgotten more than we think !

I love Radio 4 and this has been one of the best series I’ve heard on it. Informative, nostalgic, emotive, and simply wonderful. I’ll be sad when it ends, and would recommend anyone whether pro- or anti-Europe. Well done, Mark Mardell and all involved.

Great radio from a great broadcaster. I knew Mark a bit back in the day when he started out at IRN and he was always sharp, witty and on the money. This is one of his best pieces of work IMV. I love that it’s so un-BBC, talking about thorny issues like Polish immigration and even praising...Read full review »

Super interesting sofar. It’s tragic but seems inevitable for the UK to leave. I think this program is presented well balanced. I lived through much of what this programme covers, but the narrative is so compellingly written that it all seems fresh. We all need to improve our perspective on Brexit, which is the most important issue of our time, and this podcast is the indispensable way to do that.

Thanks for a great programme. Describing the slow motion car crash that is our relationship with the EU. Our vote to leave was inevitable in hindsight. I voted to stay, but despite all the challenges and undoubted economic damage, am glad we are leaving.

If you want to understand BREXIT you need to listen to this! A brilliant telling of the romantic relationship between Great Britain and “the wogs who begin at Calais”! We need more of “not the 9 o’clock news” - Rowan Atkinson got it right!

Superb analysis of Britain’s tortured relationship with consecutively The Common Market, The EEC and The EU. Evocative of the past and with incisive comments from many of the participants in the background at the time.

An excellent and fascinating insight into the UK’s relationship with Europe, including the (many) torturous steps on the journey to where we found ourselves in June 2016. Thanks to Mark and his team for taking the time to go back to the beginning of our relationship with Europe. Revisiting what many seem to have forgotten that the relationship was fostered by those who were so deeply affected by the futility of two world wars.
