Amazing Guests. Frustrating Hosts.
I listen to this show and I think that this is probably how I would act if I hosted an interview show. This is not a good thing. Listening to Thorn interrupt his guests or otherwise dominate the conversation with his tired "routines", stories, or catch phrases (e.g. "We have fun, don't we?"), I assume that he's just an ambitious guy who has kept abreast of "cool" culture and comedy. People probably always viewed him as clever and witty. But when you put him in front of a microphone, he severely overestimates his charm while trying to force some weird sense of rapport with the guest. What's most frustrating is that the quality of guests is often amazing, so listening to the host attempt to draw the conversation back to himself usually makes me want to fast forward until I hear the guests get back to what they were talking about, usually after offering some bored response like "Oh, wow" or "Really? Huh…". There are countless times where I shake my head and think, "Please, just let the guest finish this thought." Ultimately, I think it's great that he's doing the show and is able to get great guests, but I can't help but feel like I'm the same clever kid up there desperately trying to upstage everyone else.Read full review »

If they made a Cable Ace Award, but for radio, this guy would get one. He's a tastemaker for our time. Oh,...Read full review »

From They Might be Giants to Ira Glass to Tony Millionaire to Michael Cera to Henry Rollins... it just goes on and on....Read full review »
