Business Matters or not so much
Having listened to BBC in various formats for many years and more recently to BBC podcasts including Business Matters I’m disappointed in a change over the last 4-5 months to an apparently lighter and less informed style of interview. In the most recent Business Matters session the interviewer opined that Argentina winning the football World Cup might bring about regime change in Argentina. This was an apparently throw away comment winding up a discussion on Argentina’s economic problems and the lack of foreign investment to facilitate development of oil and gas shale reserves in Patagonia. This kind of interview flippancy along with a tendency for meaningless chit chat and the regular inclusion of stories with entertainment value but little significance is undermining the reputation of the BBC for serious in depth news reporting, considered interviews and an offering that outcompetes rival news broadcasters (or podcasters). I don’t know whether this is the result of changing out the show hosts on a regular basis combined with a new directive for business news to be more entertainment but it certainly isn’t working.

There is a current fashion for interviewer rudeness in both tone and questions which I dislike intensely. It’s always possible to expose inadequacies and/or gaps in understanding...Read full review »
