Mmmm Cake!
Loved this podcast with all its history on these beloved baked goods. The episode Fried scones at the Ration Shed was heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. Must admit I have never made the pineapple pie, but I do remember baking a pineapple meringue tart upon discovering the recipe in my high school home ec cookbook (Day to Day Cookery). Likewise, my late mother’s boiled fruit cake which included a tin of crushed pineapple was on regular rotation during my childhood and adolescence. I thought I had lost her recipe only to discover the exact same recipe on the Golden Circle cannery website. I suspect she too had been ‘influenced’ at some stage by Ruby Borrowdale or her ilk. Thank you for creating this, and I hope there is a season two.

More reviews of Cake the podcast
I recognised the Women’s Weekly cake book image in a second and listened to an episode for the nostalgia. I listened to more episodes which are all beautifully crafted. The history and storytelling is so well done, particularly the hard stories from Cherbourg(?).

This is fun to listen to and learn something along the way about Queensland’s food heritage. As someone who owns two of Miss Amy Schauer’s books, I’m all for solving the mysteries of how Qld’s food culture has evolved.
