Description
Learning how to forgive a cheater is one of the most difficult things in life. When I was a Family Court mediator teaching how to forgive was one of the most important things we taught. Yeah, that includes learning how to forgive a jerk, abuser, or user. Why? Learning how to forgive speeds the healing process, and prepares for future, healthy boyfriend/girlfriend dating relationships. Conversely, a lack of forgiveness brings bitterness and additional suffering. Cheating is one of the deepest betrayals one can experience in a relationship, making forgiveness seem impossible. But for a Christian single, navigating this emotional terrain can be especially challenging, bearing in mind the teachings and virtues of Christianity. If you’ve been wrestling with the hurt and anger that come from being cheated on, and are trying to find your way towards forgiveness, this guide will offer insight from a Christian perspective. 1. Understanding The Essence of Forgiveness First and foremost, it’s crucial to understand the essence of forgiveness from a Christian viewpoint. Forgiveness doesn’t necessarily mean forgetting or condoning the act, but it means releasing the hold it has on you. Colossians 3:13 states, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” The principle here is clear – forgiveness is a gift, not just to the one who wronged you, but also to yourself. The bottom line is learning how to forgive a cheater is essential to your walk  as a Christian 2. Pray for Guidance Prayer is a powerful tool for clarity and peace. Share your feelings with God, asking for guidance on how to navigate your emotions. God understands pain and betrayal and will offer comfort in ways you might not anticipate. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” 3. Seek Counsel Whether it’s a pastor, a trusted friend, or a support group, talking can help process your emotions. These individuals can offer a perspective rooted in Christian values that can be beneficial in your journey toward forgiveness. 4. Reflect on the Bigger Picture In life, everyone makes mistakes. Some are grave, like cheating, while others might be minor. Understanding that we all fall short at times can provide a perspective that makes forgiveness more attainable. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” 5. Understand Their Humanity One way to approach forgiveness is by understanding the frailty of human nature. It’s not about excusing the action but understanding that as humans, we are all prone to make mistakes. This perspective might offer you some relief from the anger and resentment you feel. 6. Set Boundaries Learning how to forgive a cheater doesn’t mean going back into a relationship without boundaries. Reflect on what you need to feel secure and respected. This might mean setting stricter boundaries or, in some cases, deciding to part ways. It’s essential to prioritize your emotional and spiritual well-being. 7. Remember the Example of Christ Jesus’ life and teachings are filled with examples of forgiveness. From forgiving those who persecuted Him to teaching about the prodigal son, the central theme remains the power and importance of forgiveness.
