🎙️Welcome to episode 8 of CTRH Podcast, where we have real conversations intended to make an actual difference.
Today’s episode is a tough one. It’s one that calls for active discussion and self reflection as well as as a call to action in the medical space. It’s also one of the reasons why this podcast came to be.
Doctors in Kenya are increasingly being accused of not listening to our patients, accused of shaming patients seeking certain medical services, and even worse, according to a recent article in one of our Dailies, accused of taking advantage of patients with reports of inappropriate behavior and even sexual assaults during clinic/hospital visits.
Have we forgotten our role as patient advocates and are there gaps in our training when it comes to interpersonal or “soft skills”? How can doctors separate personal opinion & preferences from their professional duty? What can be done to rid the profession of those who are actually abusing their positions? How can patients ensure their safety at all times and what do you need to do to advocate better for yourself during an appointment?
Please join in as I discuss all these key aspects with my senior colleague, Dr. Simon Kigondu, a consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist here in Nairobi, Kenya. He is the Hon. President of the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) and CEO at Exella Healthcare at the KMA Centre in Upperhill. He is also a medical writer & blogger.
