Description
Though 4x4 trucks gained prominence in the 1950s, 4x4 history dates back a century prior to the 1800s.  Innovators like Burstall, Hall, Diplock, Zachow and Coleman first experimented with and eventually patented the earliest forms of transfer cases and gearing that enabled early four wheel drive vehicles.  Today, four or all wheel drive is available on everything from lawnmowers to electric vehicles as a result of innovations that date back nearly 200 years.  Steve Skurnowicz is the Vice President of the Antique Truck Club of America and 4x4 enthusiast and historian.  Founded in 1971, the ATCA is dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of antique trucks.  An international community of truck enthusiasts that support the organization and host one of the largest truck shows in the world every year in Macungie, PA.       On this episode, Chris and Steve discuss the history and innovators that brought 4x4 vehicles to prominence from the 1800s to today.  They also discuss the importance of the community keeping that history alive and the role the Antique Truck Club of America, its members and its events have in preserving that history.   Follow the podcast and Chris on Instagram @classic4x4podcast and @overlandbythesea.
