Excellent podcast for comic fans
Aces. Simply aces. The very thing that makes this sooooo enjoyable is the round-table format, and the key is that it never becomes a shouting match, nor devolves into an over-the-top free-for-all; opinions are respected, yet disagreements are voiced. So far, so good. The spaces between the conversations, the tangents, the stop and start nature of the give and take – it’s as if you’re standing around with fellow comic-devotees just shooting the breeze, exchanging views and taking apart a particular title. Or comic-book movie. Or Con. Or whatever. The variety works, as does the sporadic navel-gazing. That’s the charm. And therein lies the disconnect with some people. From some of the reviews, I think a few people want a highly polished, highly focused, comic review show, pretty much devoid of personality. All well and good, but that would wear out its welcome pretty damn quickly for me. Not that CGS isn’t polished at all; it is somewhat, yet warts and all show through, and that’s a good thing. Is every show a gem? No. Is every show engrossing as all get out? No. Is every topic interesting? No. So what? It’s all about the comics, and how this bunch of geeks (there, I said it) relate to them and each other. (Favreau’s Dinner for Five comes to mind in a way.) Okay, the San Diego Comic Con shows were a bit excessive, but they provided texture. Balancing them are the episodes covering Superman 1 vs. Superman 2 (the movies), Book of the Month Club, Secret Invasion/Final Crisis, Countdown (hilarious), etc. If anything, I’d like to see less familiar imprints covered as future topics. (They very well may have been covered in past shows; have to research that.) As someone who got back into comics (after a LOOOONG time) with Identity Crisis, it’s a superb way to reconnect with comics at large. (What did I know about The Authority? Nothing. I do now.) The comics industry needs podcasts, frankly, as another way to drum up more interest. Comic shops and review sites need all the help they can get. Download and keep ‘em coming.Read full review »
