Very informative but...
I really enjoyed listening to this, especially the first few episodes. I learned a lot and the hosts eschewed many of the biases that I am familiar with. However that does not mean it’s bias-free. The pro-monarchy conversation was particularly baffling. At first I was excited to hear this take but it amounted to little more than a vague idea of monarch = stability, an idea that places consistency on a pedestal as the main virtue of a nation, and conveniently ignores the possibility of a succession crisis or unstable monarch or any of the flaws really. This is a theme that repeats itself, as the hosts rarely critique their own stance on many of these topics. Their comparison of monarchies to “democracies” also came off as disingenuous since they were primarily authoritarian regimes with a veneer of democracy, which I’m sure they knew. The next thing that struck me was the conversation regarding Yemen. Aimen lays out a very reasonable sounding self-defense argument for Saudi Arabia’s involvement in Yemen and it’s hard to disagree with the logic of it. He proceeds to reduce the Houthis to the slogan on their flag, which surprised me because it doesn’t really address their stated goals and motivations but fine. He then completely omits the main source of public outcry regarding Yemen which is HOW that war has been executed. The indiscriminate bombing of civilian centers for example. The entire conversation strikes me as almost defensive which made this omission seem calculated. Then regarding the deradicalization of Muslim extremists, Aimen concludes that most simply cannot change. The only ones who can be rehabilitated are the curious free-thinkers like him. This seems pretty self-serving and not based on any real statistics. In all I recommend listening to this only if you are prepared to be skeptical. There is a lot of good information here but it’s good to be aware of how you are being steered. Listen for the facts if not the narrative.

Amazingly interesting, frank, thoughtful journey through recent Mideast history from the perspective of an intelligent young man. Every American should listen to this podcast before embarking on our next misguided adventure in the Middle East.
