Show down in the swamp.  Az makes his move.  Stephen shows up.  Raine takes a stand.  Will Joshua survive?  Will Raine?  And what about that shovel?

Joshua thinks it's his last day on earth, but Az keeps dropping hints to Raine that her drawings can save him.  So, while Joshua visits old haunts, Raine tries to follow the demon's advice and make Joshua a comic.  But what kind of idiot follows the advice of a demon?

Raine and Joshua leave San Fran, headed for the Great Dismal Swamp and the end of Joshua's life.  Az has other ideas.

Back out on the San Fran streets, Lender and Delun finally catch up with Joshua and Raine, with bloody consequences.

The San Francisco vampires are meeting to discuss Lender's dispute with Joshua.  Fiona is making sure that Joshua goes this time, and it looks like Raine is going to have to come along.  Raine in a roomful of vampires.  Great.

Joshua's ex, Fiona, and the oldest of the SF vampires, comes over to talk vamp politics and to put Raine in her place, although Raine isn't quite what Fiona expects.  Then Joshua reveals some of the contents of apartment #3 and Raine makes a discovery and then a decision.  Time for her three phase plan to get Joshua not to send her away.

Joshua gets the truth out of Stephen--some of it, anyway--about Stephen's deal with Raine.  Raine gets the truth out of Joshua--some of it, anyway--about his past and why he can't be with her.  Only Joshua is having a really hard time keeping his hands (and teeth?) off Raine.  His best intentions about her bad ideas aside, a vampire's control can only go so far.

Raine runs, escaping from Az and the whole vampire mess.  Time to regroup.  Disguised by Linus (to throw off Delun), Raine heads home to the Tenderloin, needing information and a hit of normality.  Honestly, not going back to Joshua's seems the only rational choice.  Why hang out with monsters when you have perfectly nice friends who care about you?  Well, Raine never was one to make the rational choices....

Joshua and Raine are surprised by Barbara, and then surprised by a bit of conjure left out for them to find by Az.  Az is growing more powerful by the day.  And he has an offer for Raine.

Raine meets Joshua's best friend, Stephen, only Stephen isn't so happy about it.  Don't vampires have a 'don't kill each other's human friends' rule?  No?  Well, they should.

On the run again, Raine hears some startling gossip about her comic​.  Scraping the bottom of the barrel for hide-outs, she ends up at her sister's place.  Being eaten by a vampire would probably be better than this.  And what's up with this fever?

Raine shows up at Joshua's place, lost in some strange fever dream.  Five years ago, she kisses him and he says good-bye.  Back in the present, Raine meets someone unexpected and realizes the stakes are much higher than she thought.

Ten years ago, Joshua visits eleven year old Raine.  Back in the present, Joshua tells all!  Well, some.  Joshua tells some!

Raine is finally finding out about Joshua’s life, but the picture isn’t all that pretty.  And what’s up with his scar?  Is he really dying?

Raine puts out her comic and finds she is being stalked through the Tenderloin by a guy in a thousand dollar suit.  Joshua seems to know why.  Now if he would just explain why they are suddenly on the run...

Joshua begins his journey with little five-year-old Raine.  In the present, Raine hides from Jammer.

Joshua finds five year old Raine after her mother has died and must decide what to do with her.  Back in the present, Raine finds herself in the middle of Joshua's work as an abolitionist.

Struggling comic strip artist Raine is grinding away at her waitress job when her secret childhood friend, Joshua, appears after a five year absence.  His freaky black scar has spread and Raine suspects he's dying.  Has he just showed up to say good-bye?  And what are those three prostitutes doing hanging around the cafe like terrified baby chicks?
