“I have been listening to Crime Beat for a few years and have always liked Nancy’s careful treatment of the cases. The newest season is too much for this hardened true crime buff to handle. Each story is more of a gut punch than the last, and the details are both deeply depressing and excruciatingly painful. Have not made it through a single episode this season, and was moved to write a review a few minutes into today’s episode. The interview with the woman who was kidnapped as a child is borderline voyeuristic. I don’t see the value in having a victim, who is very clearly not in a stable place to speak about her trauma, describe the events through guttural sobs. The story could have easily been told through Nancy and would have been just as impactful, but instead I had to turn it off because I felt extremely triggered. True crime is a difficult space to navigate respectfully of course, but I fear this level of disturbia will make it harder for people to learn the victims stories, which is the point at the end of the day.”
