The "Naked Gun" of D&D Podcasts
This podcast won't appeal to everyone. People who take their RPG gaming seriously (too seriously?) be warned. This crew turns gaming on its ear. Rolling, rules and--best of all--metagaming are all set aside in favor sponteneity, frivolty, and creativity. It appears that the DM does all the rolling, which purists and dice lovers may not approve of, but it keeps the action moving and makes for a better listen. The players and DM aren't discussing roll numbers and calculating their pluses and minues, they either hit or they don't (spoiler alert, the usually don't) and they move on. Some games bog down when players spend five minutes discussing what one of them should do in the next round of combat. This game does not. Like real life (or my life, at least), they players usually announce their actions before the DM has even finished setting the scene, often to disastrous effect and always to hilarity. When angry goblins charge into the room, Ainsley insists on finishing the bunk bed she'd been construcing unnecessarily. When Leo was roused in the night to help fight off the giant wolf attack, he did exactly what I do every morning--he pressed the metaphorical snooze button. This adventure, and podcast, would be absolutely doomed if not for the steady stream of cure light wounds these bumbling characters encounter. The players, and DM, in this podcast are what so many players try helplessly to be: genuinely funny and creative. You know those spells that nobody every picks because they are interesting but have maybe only one or two useful purposes? Yeah, that's all they have when they go into battle and they almost make the work... almost. Every misguideed purchase at ye olde trade shop is put quickly to an inappropriate use, often disastrously. It is great fun to listen to this crew leap before they look, and the Australian accents (for me, an American) make the chatter all the more mercurial. I reall hope they survive long enough to keep this game and cast going, but I really, really doubt it. You have never seen (heard) an adventuring group more in need of a cleric, and less likely to know where to find one. Keep up the great work, kids. You're keeping the spirit of Charlie Chaplin, Lucille Ball, John Candy, Leslie Nielson and all those hapless "good guys" alive.Read full review »
