Design Lab is my religion
I met Dr. Ku at Stanford’s Med X Conference several years ago. At the time, I was a lecturer at Stanford’s d. School teaching healthcare design classes to interdisciplinary students. At the conference I learned about his “Health Design Lab,” at Thomas Jefferson University Medical School where he works with students to develop new design concepts for the healthcare sector. I LOVE these podcasts. I appreciate how they all connect issues regarding our environment, systemic racism, cultural norms and a complex healthcare system while exposing the elephants in the room such as current US birth outcomes in black and brown communities, the difference between universal vs. inclusive design, and the history of intentionally designed inequity in our country (ie. redlining communities). As I tell my students, design can be a form of activism. I loved today’s episode with Pinar Guvenc from SOUR. She coined a term that resonated for me, “Diagnostic Ideation”. I thought that was a very accurate description of what we do when we want to get to the “why” behind problems. The idea is to expose an insight through asking “why?” “The 5 whys” is an iterative interrogative technique used to explore the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a particular problem. The primary goal of the technique is to determine the root cause of a defect or problem by repeating the question "Why?". Each answer forms the basis of the next question. The "five" in the name derives from an anecdotal observation on the number of iterations needed to resolve the problem. This technique can be traced to Sakichi Toyoda, a Japanese inventor and industrialist. Not to be trivialized: Dr. Ku’s extremely soothing voice. Something we all can benefit from.Read full review »
