“I can relate to the name issue. Thank you for your vulnerability. My name is Kwame and when I was laid off I couldnβt get any call backs for jobs. So I started going by Kay. Kay got tons of call backs, Kwame never did. In school and college, teachers mispronounced my name. Middle school was the worst because Kwame the rapper was popular and I got teased endlessly about it. I actually wanted to change my name to Karen π. I swore I was going to change it by the time I became an adult but then I learned to appreciate my name until I was laid off, not getting call backs with my given name hurt. It hurt that I had to americanize it to get a job. Why canβt I just be my authentic self? Code switching is exhausting.”
