Welcome to another episode of "Dialogue over Division" with Landon Johnston, the driving force behind the hugely successful Recall Gondek petition. When I say "successful," I'm referring to how the Recall Gondek petition has ignited civic engagement in Calgary, something all Canadians should take note of. Regardless of whether the petition achieves its goal, citizens of Calgary are sending a message to elected officials and are actively participating in democracy. For those who may not be familiar, Jyoti Gondek is the mayor of Calgary. With her approval rating at an all-time low and her advocacy for controversial policies affecting Calgarians, Landon recognized the widespread disapproval and felt compelled to take action. It's worth noting that Landon is a tradesman—an ordinary, good-hearted, and honest individual who saw an issue and decided to act. Motivated by his concern for justice and fairness, he launched the Recall Gondek petition, which quickly gained momentum. However, Landon and his team have faced numerous hurdles and endured many attacks along the way, from navigating administrative hurdles to responding to vandalized signs. But nothing stopped them. At a time when civic engagement is more crucial than ever, initiatives like the Recall Gondek petition highlight the importance of ordinary citizens actively participating in the democratic process. It demonstrates how individuals like Landon can effect change and hold elected officials accountable. It is worth noting that Mayor Gondek has already accounted that she will not be seeking re-election, this is not a coincidence.
