A harsh but accurate critique after the NDT episode
I had no problems at all with the ideology presented on DD (we're pretty much on the same page), but the podcast itself was a wreck. Here are the problems they nee dot hammer out: First, the thing is 3 freaking hours long! You need a producer who will help trim that. All the adorable banter and chit-chat could take off 50 minutes of nonsense without losing any protein. Let's consider the recent episode with Neil DeGrasse Tyson for example: there was a looong segment all about transgender people and bathroom access before NDT was aired. I'm not kidding. We had to sit through half an hour of the hosts going ON and ON about all the possible considerations and arrangements of gender, restrooms, and personal comforts, including such gems as "I don't want to rip a giant fart in front of a girl in the bathroom!" The hosts even quipped, "This is what we're airing before Neil DeGrasse Tyson!", and yet this flicker of self-awareness was snuffed out as the subject plowed on. I can't imagine a single audience member who was actually intrigued to hear the hosts' prolonged discussions of bathroom issues. Finally we get to the star: Neil DeGrasse Tyson! WOW! Half of the interview was amazing…And then the host wasted the second half hashing out a personal gaffe he'd made with Dr. Tyson from years ago. This bit means NOTHING to the audience, but we had to sit through the host's personal making amends…on and on…His one chance to interview Dr. Tyson, and the host chooses to feed us personal navel-gazing about something that carries no interest to anyone else but himself. Thank God Dr. Tyson was gracious and went along with it. then ten minutes of "comic" co-host huffing and puffing about not being included in the debate, padded with slow-paced recitations of similar past complaints, all couched in more "isn't our chemistry just adorable?" banter. Okay, then we move on to analysis of a Huffington Post article about "three mistakes most atheists make." For this, we get to hear more random exposition about all three points. None of this is substantive, mind you, it's just people with a microphone rambling off the tops of their heads about the article. The show concludes with a built-up segment on a country song that the hosts promise will really stick it to sexist stereotypes. Okay, I'm curious! The hosts give a long preamble in which we are reminded of all the country music stereotypes, what songs to find them in, etc. Finally the song starts, and within seconds they stop it--so they can interject to make sure we noticed that it REALLY DID deliver the aforementioned blow to a stereotype and name-check another country song. Well, gawrsh! Good thing you stopped the song after 20 seconds to re-narrate the points you'd already made about it, 'cause any audience of a three-hour podcast couldn't possibly maintain attention! This happens several more times. Oh, and you know how we all have that friend who shoots video and constantly zooms in, then zooms out, then in, then out? That's what they do with the volume. The host thinks it's too loud, so he turns the music down. Then there'e a part he wants to make sure we noticed, so he turns that part up. Then he wants to narrate through it some more, so he turns it back down. (You'll later discover they do the same thing to their own closing music, too). Aargh! Just play the !@$% song! (Which, by the way, wasn't nearly as clever as the hosts had built up with such anticipatory promises) Audio problems are rife; nobody equalizes the audio, so some pre-recorded segments are so loud and have so much bass that they can't be listened to. Honestly, I don't think I can take this podcast. There are so many cleverer options out there ("Reasonable Doubts" for starters), and I just don't have time to listen to three more hours of chit-chat. Did I just hear a bad episode?Read full review »

I was a little hesitant at first because when I hear "debate" in regard to religion, I think, "What's really the point here? What are we talking about and who are we trying to reach? Are we debating creationists, because if so that just gives them a platform to stand on." However I've really...Read full review »

Just wanted to comment and tell ya I am digging the podcast. Great to hear believers actually come on and discuss stuff. To bad a lot of the times it seems they contradict themselves. I understand the commercials help to pay for the podcast and everything however, how about at least dropping...Read full review »
