Starts out well and then goes off elsewhere.
Any Dolly fan would enjoy the first few episodes as Jad describes Dolly’s hardships starting off as a struggling entertainer. Every now and then he mentions some facts and then plays part of interviews he’s had with her to verify the fact, letting her add a few more details sometimes. It really does give you a visual of a sort of scrapbook on podcast. You hear pieces of the Porter Wagoner Show and you hear Dolly describe how she felt regarding the show. However, they don’t give into her childhood as much as one would think they would. Starting there would have been great where she mentions memories she rarely has time to talk about on tv shows and they don’t allow her much time to paint us a picture. The episodes are all over the place when they should have been in better order. Jad should have first spoken about how he got to the point he was in when creating the series and how his dad met her and how she’s friends of many who come from different backgrounds but she’s able to unite us all. Then perhaps how he went to Dollywood and was asked by her nephew to visit her mountain home where he sees exactly what her model at Dollywood matches and how her songs describe the house. In later episodes continuing down her life to how she went from a 21 year old on the Porter show to knowing how to manage herself then hiring a manager, etc. Instead what we get are various artists who dive into her music but talk mostly about the history of country music and what they think her songs mean. It is neat to hear stories of how she brings people together and how they started writing because of her though but once they start doing this, it turns into a radio show basically where Dolly is no longer the subject and they focus more on the guest. It really does need to stay focused on Dolly, her history, but touch on unique stories relating to Dolly and not so much about their own lives. One guy in particular said he listened to Dolly but mostly banjo playing came about because his family was playing together. It would just be more interesting to hear her story, sound bites and clips, with some interviews and personal experience walking in her footsteps with perhaps locals to Pigeon Forge and Sevierville and those who’ve collaborated with her.

More reviews of Dolly Parton's America
I love Jad on Radio Lab so I was willing to give this a listen. I’ve never been a Dolly fan, but appreciate classic country music. Going in expecting a straightforward interview/biography podcast, this turned out to be very well rounded approach to her life, art, and the world she has lived in. I...Read full review »
