Please stop saying "Aaaacquisition Disorder", Alex. Seriously. Please. Stop it.
Okay, the positives. The Dukes of Dice is a podcast that is very good at selecting the best games in the hobby and reviewing them. The hosts, Sean and Alex, have really good chemistry and work well together. They have a ratings system that is perfect: broken down between games they don't enjoy, games they would play again but not collect, games they would collect and keep in their "duchy", and their favorite must-own games. (Yeah. More on that rating system in a second.) These two are able to take complex rule books from games like Kan Ban Automotive Revolution and Alchemists and break them down so they aren't so daunting. Is this a good podcast and am I glad I subscribed to it? Yes. Did I then unsubscribe to it? Unfortunately, yes. I followed along for about ten episodes or so, but then had to drop it from my queue. The reason? A simple, two word phrase: "acquisition disorder". This phrase is used in the hobby to describe compulsive purchases and in some game systems can literally put someone in deep financial peril. It's a serious compulsion. The problem is on this podcast host Alex uses the phrase way too much. I mean way, way, way too much. The podcast is about board game collecting. Both hosts are board game collectors. The main topic of the show is board games that should be collected. And the intended audience is board game collectors. Why, then, pray tell, does Sean (the more knowledgable of the two) recommend a game only to be countered by Alex saying "Aaaacquisition Disorder!" (The "a" is sustained for effect.) One week on the news segment Sean announced a micro expansion (micro expansion!!!) for Eldritch Horror. Alex asked if he would buy it, Sean answered in the affirmative, and Alex said "Aaaacquisition disorder!" Huh????? It's Eldritch Horror, for crying out loud! Of course you want to expand that game. And any board game podcast should devote time not only to the base game but all its expansions as well. And furthermore, when they assign a rating to a game doesn't it make sense to say "I would collect this game" as an endorsement? I mean, isn't that precisely what their ratings system is based on???? Yelling "Aaaacquisition Disorder!" immediately after recommending a game is extremely confusing for the listener and makes no sense. I really like this podcast outside of that but unfortunately that is enough of a turn off to prevent me from recommending it. You might browse the episode descriptions and listen to select episodes depending on what game is being reviewed, but I wouldn't recommend subscribing unless you like hearing that phrase overused.Read full review »

More reviews of Dukes of Dice
I really enjoy the chemistry between Sean and Alex. It gives a nice balanced view of some of the hot new games and some older titles. And sufficiently different from other podcasts in the dice tower to justify queuing them up. And even though they’re one of the newest members of the dice tower...Read full review »

This podcast was a great find, and not what I expected. I came in thinking that this would be the more gaming experienced Sean leading the newer gamer Alex into more complex games, and I would enjoy listening to the ride and hearing about games I possibly missed on my own journey. Instead, they...Read full review »
