“I loved this podcast so much from the first episode that I had to share my thoughts with everyone I know! This is my write up from my author mailing list-
Encounter party combines two of my favourite things - Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, which is especially awesome seeing as I gushed about MTG last week 😅
Anyway, this podcast is a group of people playing a game of D&D set in my favourite place in the Magic multiverse: Ravnica, the city of guilds.
These guys are professional voice actors and the quality of production is obvious from the start. They have music and sound effects to set the scene and celebrate those natural 20s! Anyone that's ever played D&D knows that things can go off-topic pretty easily. However, these episodes have perfect editing where you don't feel like you're missing anything and everything that is included adds to the overall experience in neat chunks that last an hour or so.
Brian, the Dungeon Master, is a skilled host, painting vivid pictures of the unique world of Ravnica. I'm a long-time fan of the setting but even someone who's never seen a piece of the artwork would be immersed by the beautiful story telling. His voices for every NPC are different and expertly crafted, showing layers of their personality within the delivery before you even get to know them.
Each of the player characters are distinct and interesting in their own way too, from a clumsy, big-hearted minotaur to a spore-wielding undercity elf, it's difficult to choose a favourite! Thing is, the players are fantastic at playing their character and have so much fun with the game mechanics outside of them too. Every episode has made me laugh out loud and I'm on the eighth one. After only finding this podcast three days ago... I promise I wrote stuff in between, stop judging me!
While cooking, brushing my teeth, grinding a few levels on Three Houses, I've been listening to Encounter Party, desperate to catch up to the current episode while knowing I'll hate that moment when I do because I'll have to wait until the next one. You don't have to be a D&D expert or own a Magic: The Gathering deck to appreciate this gem. Everything is clear and explained, yet packed with such a deep, mysterious story that you'll forget this is a game. Instead, it's an epic tale that you feel part of and desperate to know what happens next.
