“I sympathize with Meacham’s perspective and he speaks and writes with considerable authority. The series is well crafted but oddly, I find the general thesis stated in ep. 1 rather poorly articulated. The Republicans — or as Americans like to say “the right” — are surely a dangerous threat to US democracy but are they simply a “gloomier” prospect? Rather a weak central claim that wouldn’t pass muster in a university history paper.”
