Ian shares the songs that influence One Leg One Eye and Lankum and continues the work of past collectors. The deep dives into a song are fascinating but the mixtapes of whatever’s caught Ian’s attention are my favourites. Great scholarship, musicianship and chat, and a great listen.

I came across this fantastic podcast through a review of Lankum in the Guardian. A treat for anyone interested in trad. Maith thú!

Discovered this show today when listening to an old episode of The Slip on NTS and then listened to the Willie O’Winsbury bonus and immediately shared it with my brother, my dad, my best friend and anyone who made the mistake of letting me work it into the conversation. I’ve listened to three (!)...Read full review »

This is a fantastic podcast. I thought I knew something about the ballad tradition, but I've learned so much more from listening to Fire Draw Near, including new versions of well-known ballads and some I’d never heard before. Ian Lynch has an astonishing breadth and depth of knowledge about...Read full review »

A modern and eclectic exploration of traditional ballads and songs and their migration from Ireland, Scotland and England. Essential listening. The bonus episodes are a great perk if you support the project.

I’ve been listening to FDR since 2020 and by now it feels like I took a college elective in traditional song/singing but with pints instead of papers - funny, informative, and covers a lot of history that gets overlooked in the States even as we so often share it. Superb podcast.

If you want a podcast to give you the knowledge required to be the bloke in the corner of the pub that can chew your ear off for hours about all the good trad; then this be the one. Never a dull episode, always a pleasure.

I have learned so much about music and songs that I have heard my whole life and found so much amazing new artists and music as well. Ian’s approach is not from a stiff, academic know it all place. Instead it’s akin to hanging out with a friend as he plays records and shares his deep, researched...Read full review »

Ian does an incredible job of selecting tracks that deepen your musical appreciation, expand your historical knowledge, and really just brings a lot of joy that he shares with us. If you’re interested in traditional music, look no further, I wouldn’t miss any episodes!

I don’t know a whole lot about what’s talked about on this podcast but between the magical music and the no frills straight forward histories and speculationsI’m really happy I stumbled across this. I love to hear ancient folk songs and the oldest possible recordings I can find, this podcast is...Read full review »

Wish I could do what this guy does. It’s been said here, but I love how he de-academizes the study of this music while still putting in insanely rigorous research. Amazing amazing stuff. Please keep it up.

This show is genius. The history is fascinating, and the music is all beautiful. Put into historical context and made human, the delivery is not at all “academic” (using that term as a pejorative) but is coming from a place of love and passion (and is still well researched and thoughtfully...Read full review »

Beautiful gem of a podcast this. Ian Lynch (of Lankum) digs into some great material, songs, info and more. If you’re at all into trad or folk it’ll be right up your alley I’m sure
