Shameful secret
Must listen. This episode is prizeworthy journalism. Only Lulu, who has dedicated her career to reporting on Middle East could offer us this profoundly intimate meditation on reporting the war in Iraq. This is a story about the friendships that are forged through the acts of war reporting. We hear Lulu in conversation with her friend (who saved her husband’s life!) and former Iraqi translator, grappling in real time with the most existential questions about the costs of war, the value of friendship, the courage to tell stories, and the very questions at the heart war of journalism: why do reporters risk their lives, and the lives of others in service of information. For whom is the information relevant, particularly in a nation such as ours, when the news of the world beyond our bubble falls on deaf ears. I rarely hear such humanity, vulnerability and honesty in journalism. Thanks lLulu, for daring to introspect, to ask of yourself, “have I been asking the wrong question?”

So much nuance in this story and such a unique angle on the topic. It was riveting, terrifying, empowering.
